Seize the Day

Now is the time.  Can you believe we are coming up on the conclusion of the first quarter?  It seems like yesterday was the first day of our new decade.  Yet, here we are, day 85 of 2010; 280 days remaining in the year.  Isn't it funny (sad?) how one day leads to a week, which leads to a month, which leads to a quarter.... Now that we've established that time flies, it is time for the real question.

What have you done during the first 85 days of 2010 that has been solely focused on managing your career?

Now is the time.  Not only is it time to focus on you, but your company needs you.  According to a 2009
American Society for Training & Development poll taken by 1,179 organizations, 79 percent say there is a skills gap in their organization now. Read closely, because here is where the opportunity is for you.  Fifty-one percent say that the number one reason for a skills gap in their organizations was that the skills of the organization's current workforce did not match changes in strategy. The number two reason included a lack of bench strength in the company's leadership ranks.  When the companies were asked their greatest skill need, 50% responded leadership / executive level skills.  That means you are a perfect place to take advantage of an opportunity in market timing.   You are the solution to your organizations problems.  You had better not be just working - instead, you should be working your career.

Before you know it, it will have been a <insert right word here -- month, day, year> since your last review.  You walked out of that meeting thinking that you were going to do something different.  Now is the time.  Take control of your career.  That is what that something different needs to be.
