Throughout my life I have experienced many career changes.  Some changes were easier, like accepting a promotion or taking a promising position with a new company.  Some changes were more difficult, like being laid off or completely changing careers.  We can define changes as four different types:  planned and easy, planned and difficult, unplanned and easy, unplanned and difficult.
