Silent Career Killer: Tardiness

Send a summary of this page to someone via email.
Everyone knows who this is.  I don’t need to define, because if you are chronically tardy - you know it - and if you aren’t - you know exactly who is!  I recently read that 30% of employers have terminated an employee due to tardiness.

Less drastic impacts of being late are:

  • Missed opportunities.  If you are not present, you cannot be heard.
  • Diminished credibility.  You cannot hold others to deadlines, if you miss the ‘starting’ deadline.
  • Tarnished image.  People do notice when you start sneaking in back doors.  That is water cooler material.

Possible remedies:
  • Whether you are late for work or for meetings, set alarm reminders.  15 minutes should suffice.  Either get up 15 minutes earlier or start winding down activities 15 minutes prior to ensure arrival to a meeting on time.
  • If mornings are not your thing, prepare in advance (i.e. the evening prior).  This includes: laying out clothes, packing lunches, organizing briefcase, etc.

The stress created by continuously running late is completely avoidable.  Think about the last time you arrived early to work, a meeting, or an event.  Wasn’t it kind of rewarding?
