Have you ever had a dinner party
and there was a guest that stayed too long, just couldn’t get the hint
that it was time to go? Sometimes, you can be working in your chosen
career and miss the signals that the time to go has, well, come and
gone.
Career Change Signals
You are no longer “In the Know”.
Interest in your field or subject has decreased. You’ve quit reading
the latest trends or keeping up on the industry happenings
You’d Rather go to the Dentist. Time used to fly by as you would get lost in your work for hours and hours. Now, 8 minutes seems like 8 hours.
You no Longer Hide Your True Feelings. The once positive, sunny disposition has been replaced by sour expressions and general moodiness.
You’ve Become a Clock Watcher.
Arriving early and staying until the work is complete is a thing of the
past. Now you can’t get out of bed. You arrive late and leave early.
Your new motto is “the work will still be there tomorrow.”
If not handled appropriately, these singles can and will destroy the reputation you’ve worked so hard to establish. While this is a short list, do a quick inventory if you do any of these, or something very similar. If you find this clearly describes you, very quickly get in front of the issue. This might help:
Focus on proactive career management. Determine if you want to completely change companies or just jobs within the company.
Have a direct and honest conversation with your boss on your current performance.
Touch base with your mentor for guidance on how to best handle the situation. This is hard to tackle independently.
