My Reading List

Send a summary of this page to someone via email.

It's not really a book club, per se, but I am sharing a recommended read.  The list will include titles that are helpful to your career development.

Why book recommendations?

In 2008 almost 9,000 new business books were written.  That number does not include Computer, Economics, or Finance books.  What's interesting about the 9,000 is that is in addition to the 8,000 in 2007, 9,000 in 2006...well you the the point!  If so many books are written, there must be good information available to us, but with so many books it is hard to find the good information.   So, giving on-topic recommendations seems like the right thing to do to help you.

The screening criteria

spring reading listIf I'm going to be recommending books to read, I thought it might be a good idea to tell you how they are chosen.  Many hours and hours are spent poring through books at the library and the bookstore.   It's not about the most purchased book on a particular topic; it is about how useful and interesting the information is between the covers!  Yes, I've read each and every book recommended.  That is how they get on the list.   I'm guessing that for each book listed, I've read maybe 6-7 other books.  The picture above is my current reading list.  Final selections are made by the following formula:

Criteria 1 + Criteria 2 + Criteria 3 must = 3

Each criterion is given either a 0 or 1 rating

Criteria 1:  The book cannot be thousands of pages long.  My attention span rivals that of a gnat!
Criteria 2:   The book must have well thought out, useful information.  I really like when activities are included in a workbook fashion.
Criteria 3:  The information must be presented in a format that keeps me, the reader, interested.  This is integral to the equation, due to the short attention span I mentioned above.  However, due to the formula - just being interesting doesn't cut it!

We are all different

Some recommendations on the list are classics.  Nothing new-age about them.  Others are for specific generations or points in your career lifecycle.  Most you'll want to add to your personal library, to write in the margin and highlight key reference points.  Some you'll be able to access through the public library.  None will be fiction - although I love a good mental distraction - so don't get me started!  (Note:  Due to popular demand, I did add a page of fiction recommendations!)
