Silent Career Killer: Not Listening

Send a summary of this page to someone via email.
Not ListeningRemember that telephone game you played as a child? You would tell a short sentence to someone and they would tell it to the next person and by the time the message passed through a dozen people it was so different from the original it had everyone laughing. If as adults this happens at work, what is the ultimate cost? A 2010 study by the British Quality Foundation and the Chartered Quality Institute found that more than half of all employees spend 10% of their time correcting mistakes – or that 40 billion hours a week are spent on correcting errors. If we all worked for only $1.00 a week, that is a LOT of zeroes.

"We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak"

~ Greek Philosopher  Epictetus

Techniques to Better Listening

Focus on the other person. Put your thoughts and feelings aside. Listen with the intent to understand.

  • Give the speaker your undivided attention
  • Look at the speaker directly - smile
  • Don’t mentally prepare a rebuttal
  • Encourage speaker to continue by nodding or use of small verbal comments (yes, okay, etc)

Restate the other person’s ideas using your own works.

  • “What I’m hearing is...”
  • “Sounds like you are saying…”

The benefits of this are two-fold – it demonstrates we really do understand and the other person will know we have a clear understanding.
