Managing Time without a 25 Hour Day!

Send a summary of this page to someone via email.
If you are lucky enough to manage your time wisely, this article is not for you! I suspect, however, for most of us, time management is one of the biggest challenges women face in today’s marketplace.  Between work, family, personal time and community, fitting everything into a 24 hour day just doesn’t seem to fall into place the way we would like it to.  Managing multiple tasks and responsibilities is simply not easy.  Courses have been created around time management.  Books are available on how to get a handle on time.  No matter how organized one might be and with even the best of intentions, life has a way of throwing a curve ball and disrupting even well thought out plans!  Hard as we try and committed as we are to managing our time, there simply isn’t enough!

Planning is Key

Completing one successful task on your ‘to do list’ each day can make a huge difference.  When you do one simple productive thing on a daily basis, your activity compounds over time.  Activity leads to productivity.  Successful business people are doers.  They don’t make excuses.  They are organized, energized, consistent and productive.  They are realistic in what they can accomplish, take on those tasks they know they can handle and learn to say no.

Focus on not Wasting Time

Prioritize what’s important – weekly, daily and hourly.  Get older/capable family members to share household responsibilities.  Divide up tasks according to capability.  It is never too early to teach children cooperative participation.  You can’t and shouldn’t ‘do it all’ when others can contribute their time!  (Responsible youngsters learn by doing.  It’s not by accident that they become responsible adults.  They observe you on how you manage your time.)

Have you ever met anyone that says, “I’ve had enough time”?  Or, how many times have you heard someone say, “I had time to kill.”  Either way, no one can ever appreciate the value of time until it’s gone.  Time is truly a moment to moment experience.  One second, one minute, one hour, one day, one week, one year in incremental moments.  How you ‘spend’ it or how you ‘waste it’ is a decision only you can make.  It comes down to choices.

I went on line to read what others had to say about managing time, and came up with the following to share.  These are a few favorites.

Inspirational quotes on Time Management

ooooooo"Don't say you don't have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein."  -- H. Jackson Brown

"The bad news is time flies. The good news is you're the pilot."  -- Michael Altshuler

"A wise person does at once, what a fool does at last. Both do the same thing; only at different times."  -- Baltasar Gracian

“Many people seem to think that success in one area can compensate for failure in other areas. But can it really?...True effectiveness requires balance."  -- Stephen Covey

"Never let yesterday use up today."  -- Richard H. Nelson

What can you do and what are you willing to do to balance your life and manage your time?  What intrudes on your time that you can eliminate?  Do you function best with check lists?  Are you more productive by prioritizing your day/week?  Whatever you can implement, take that necessary first step.  As your progress improves, you’ll increase productivity.

Easy?  No way.

Worth it?  Absolutely.

There are hundreds of time management quotes available on line – copy a few and post where you can frequently read them!  It’s reassuring to know we are not alone in this ever present battle to fit everything into a 24 hour day.  And while it would be great to have 25 hours instead of 24, it’s likely we would continue to face the same dilemma – finding enough time!  Remember, our lives really do unfold one moment at a time.  Develop strategies that work for you and applaud your success.
