Chronicles of a Graduate: An Inquiring Mind
By Patty Marra, Series Guest Blogger
I don’t know about you, but I’m exhausted. Week three on the job finds me grabbing at anything caffeinated between the fear of falling asleep at my desk or falling asleep during the commute. It’s nearly Labor Day, and every day has felt like Friday. Where is that groove I’m supposed to be hitting? Isn’t the numbness supposed to set in eventually? Not apathy, just….the ability to function on 7 hours of sleep. Getting a feel for a company is challenging. Beyond that, getting a feel for a manager is difficult. Every person has a different expectation of notification. Some supervisors want to be cc’d on everything. I generally assume more communication is better than less, but I feel a slight pang of guilt every time I fill in that cc line. Of course, there are instances where it makes sense…but all those tiny, seemingly insignificant messages? For someone who gets hundreds (at minimum) of emails each day, I’m just clogging up the flow. Ebb and Flow It’s also the little things that make the difference between a long, drawn-out day and hours that fly by. Things like a quick break to find pictures of miniature animals, lunch with coworkers, and theme days. I don’t like to live for the weekend, because the weekend is such a small portion of our lives. If that’s all we’re working toward and all the space between is gray filler, then we’re missing a lot of time. However, does the space in between weekends become better as you settle into positions that bring you more fulfillment? A lot of questions for you all this week. I guess the 15 hours of driving per week has resulted in a lot of pondering. About the Author Patty Marra
