Chronicles of a Graduate: AH! CHANGE!By Patty Marra, Series Guest Blogger
Happy New Year, everyone! Welcome to 2012. Have you made any resolutions? I mentioned a few changes I hope to make in my last post, which I intend to stick to, in addition to the standard, “I’m really going to make time to go the gym this year. For real.” Whatever changes you are looking to make with the turn of the calendar page, I wish you all the best. Change is a funny thing. It’s what resolutions are all about—making promises to ourselves to do something we aren’t already doing. It’s as if January is this magical time when change is completely okay—encouraged, in fact! Well, in many cases. One of the things I have noticed from my four months in the workforce is that people are very comfortable with being comfortable. It’s easy to get up, go to work, and know exactly what to expect when you sit down at your desk. We’re in the midst of changing some processes around in my position, and I can’t even begin to describe how upset people are at the concept of change. Whispered conversations behind cubicle walls and darting glances to make sure they aren’t overheard decorate the hallways like the garland that may still be hanging on your Christmas tree (I don’t know about you, but ours tends to stay up until March). Appreciate the Familiar, Embrace the Modifications
It strikes me as so funny to walk down the hallway hearing conversations that begin with, “What are your resolutions for this year?” and shift to “I hate when they change things on us!” all over the course of 2 minutes. I’ll admit, I do appreciate the comfort of the familiar, but I’m always looking for a new, better way to do something. If someone else comes up with a way to make my job a little easier…then why not give it a shot? Sure, change can be a little daunting, but it can also be a fantastic opportunity to learn. Maybe that’s another resolution for the workplace: appreciate the familiar, embrace the modifications.
